In June 2009, Staman Ogilvie sustained a severe spinal cord injury while riding his bicycle. Staman has decided to use this experience for the good of those who currently suffer from a spinal injury or will suffer from one in the future.
The Staman Ogilvie Fund for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Rehabilitation and Research was created to assist individuals who have been afflicted by spinal cord injury, brain injury or neurological disorders that disrupt their lives.
Since September 2009, Staman and his friends, family and colleagues from across the country and around the world have raised more than $6 million toward the $10 million goal. As a result of funds raised, researchers have already made an extraordinary discovery focused on the regeneration of insulating fat for spinal nerves not significantly damaged during the injury.
Staman continues to receive most of his treatment at MNI and TIRR. These institutions are uniquely prepared to care for victims of spinal cord injury. Patients with spinal cord injury face weeks, months or years of rehabilitation after suffering a serious injury or disease. Memorial Hermann is the only institution in the Greater Houston area to provide a full continuum of care from its Level I trauma center through rehabilitation. TIRR Memorial Hermann is one of seven designated centers in the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network and has been ranked one of America’s Best Rehabilitation Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for the past 21 years.
Memorial Hermann, in collaboration with UTHealth The University of Texas Health Science Center Houston, promises to set the highest standards in scholarly and applied research in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Their objectives are to discover practical solutions and to provide hope for people with physical disabilities.
