Ways to Spend Less on Gas in Your Handicapped Van

Gas expenses can be significant when you own a handicapped van. Each method of reducing gas costs makes a small difference. Combine them for significant savings that really add up over the course of a year.

Pay Less for Gas When Filling Up Your Handicapped Van

There are smart ways to get cheaper gas for your handicapped van. If you don’t already, pay attention to gas prices around town. Note the cheapest ones in your area. Don’t fill up at stations right off of major highways. They’re invariably the most expensive. Plan ahead on a trip so you don’t get stuck using the first gas station you see. If you’re crossing state lines, research ahead which states on your trip have the cheapest gas and fill up there. Download an app that finds the closest, cheapest gas.

Buy gas early in the morning or at night. This is particularly beneficial in the summer. Gas expands in the heat, reducing its density. By filling up mid-day during the peak of hot weather, you get less gas in your gallon. Also, many gas companies and supermarkets offer gas cards that earn reward points that knock off some of the price of gas. Keep an eye out for local offerings.

Take Care of Your Handicapped Van

Aspects of your handicapped van’s condition and maintenance affect its gas mileage. Make sure the tires are properly inflated. If they’re too low, gas mileage suffers. Air in tires expands in the heat just like gas, so perform pressure checks in the morning or at night, and not after the van’s been driven. Only use snow tires in the winter. They create more friction that increases gas usage.

Have the oil changed every 3,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual to be certain your van is getting the right oil. The wrong kind increases your engine’s workload and gas consumption. Have the engine tuned annually. While it’s being done, have your belts, filters, battery power, fluid levels and other parts checked. Replace parts as needed. This keeps the van working at optimum efficiency and can save you from far more costly repairs later.
